For nonprofits and community organizations up the coast

Tech Training for BC's Coastal Communities

The Up Coast course, taught in person in your town, delivered with your nonprofit. If it takes a grant, we go after one together.

  • Remote tech salaries are pricing locals out of their own towns.
  • Getting into tech has meant leaving for the training and the first job.
  • This brings both here: the training, and the network that leads to the job.

Who teaches it, and why here

I'm Abbey Jackson. I got into tech with no money and no degree because someone took a chance on me, and it turned into a Staff Engineer job at Rivian and a Mobile Lead job at Mastercard. I live in the Comox Valley and I grew up in Gibsons. This is the Tech Access Initiative, Up Coast's social venture: I want tech open to people it is usually closed to, the financial gates taken down, and my own coastal communities looked after. I run the course free online for anyone in the world. Running it in person up the coast takes a local partner, and that is you.

How a Grant-Funded Cohort Works

6 weeks

The full course, in person

The same 9 classes as the public cohort, taught in your community. Homework help between classes and a personal review of every student's final package.

Up to 30 people

Nobody needs a tech background to start.

$6,000 CAD

Per cohort of up to 30

A fraction of what the same course costs a company, because this is the social-venture part of Up Coast. If your organization needs a grant to cover it, I work on the application with you. Students pay nothing.

Custom cohorts if your funder needs specific outcomes

The only thing Up Coast prices in Canadian dollars.

Where I can come to you

The Sunshine Coast, Powell River and qathet, the Comox Valley and north, and the islands in between. If your community is on the coast and not on this list, ask anyway.

Based in the Comox Valley

Everyone who finishes gets their own spot in the Up Coast Builders network, alongside engineers and founders from everywhere else the course runs.
